365 DAYS/365 PLAYS
BY SUZAN-LORI PARKS:
A 2017 REMIX
Co-directed by Rick Shiomi, Martha B. Johnson & Harry Waters, Jr.
Cameo Directors: James A. Williams, Stephanie Lein Walseth & Lara Trujillo
at Penumbra Theater, May 26 – June 11, 2017
This production will present 45 short plays selected from Parks' 365 Days/365 Plays, viewed through a 2017 lens, to create a compelling theater experience.
The plays range from hilarious parody and theater-of-the-absurd, to pieces of powerful lyricism and epic tragedy, and speak forcefully to past and present issues: major events in American history, racism, anti-war themes, and other pressing social concerns.
Our 2017 Remix aims to deeply involve diverse audiences in Parks' unique humor and vision of healing in America.
365 Days/365 Plays
In 2002, Parks whimsically decided to write one play a day for an entire year, resulting in her brilliant collection, 365 Days/365 Plays. In 2007 the premiere of 365 Days/365 Plays became a national phenomenon, with over 700 theaters across America collectively presenting all 365 plays, “creating one of the largest grassroots collaborations in theater history.” Parks designed this massive premiere to include as many theaters as possible, crossing ethnic, racial, and economic lines.
While Parks states that “365 is a black play” she also comments that “maybe what that means is ‘black plays’ are plays that cross boundaries.” While some of the selected plays deeply reflect the African American experience, the plays altogether cross boundaries and reflect a broader, multiracial and multicultural perspective of America.
365 Days/Plays beautifully fulfills our mission to produce plays addressing diversity and social justice from a cross-cultural point of view, with the opportunity to engage a diverse cast and production team.
Parks is a Pulitzer and MacArthur “Genius” Award winning playwright and author. Her works include: 365 Days/365 Plays, Topdog/Underdog, an adaptation of The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess for Broadway, and most recently, Father Comes Home From The Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3).
